What are AI Overviews, and why do they matter for your business?
If you’ve searched Google recently, you’ve likely seen it: before the usual list of blue links, there’s now a written summary answering your question directly — often with a handful of sources cited alongside it. That’s an AI Overview, and it’s one part of a much bigger shift in how search works.
What exactly is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is a generated summary that Google produces in response to a search query, pulling together information from multiple sources into a single answer. Instead of clicking through several websites to compare information, many users now read the AI-generated summary and stop there — or click through to just one or two of the sources it cites.
The same underlying shift is happening beyond Google: tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are increasingly used as a starting point for research, recommendations and comparisons — including “who should I use for X in Spain” style questions.
Why this matters for your business
If your business isn’t one of the sources an AI Overview cites — or isn’t clearly understood by AI systems in the first place — you can be doing everything ‘right’ by traditional SEO standards and still lose the enquiry before a potential client ever reaches your website.
This is particularly significant for high-value, considered purchases like property, relocation, legal and financial services — exactly the categories where international clients in Spain are already using AI tools to shortlist who to contact.
What actually influences whether you get cited
- How clearly your content answers specific questions, rather than only describing your services in general terms
- Whether your business is described consistently and accurately across your website, Google Business Profile and other listings
- Structured data (schema markup) that helps AI systems parse your content accurately
- Genuine topical depth — content that demonstrates real expertise, not just keyword-stuffed pages
What to do about it
This isn’t a reason to abandon traditional SEO — it’s a reason to build on top of it. Strong technical and on-page SEO remains the foundation. AI search visibility (AEO & GEO) is the additional layer that determines whether that foundation gets you cited and recommended, not just ranked.
